Prague tips (Prague information)
– NEVER CHANGE MONEY ON THE STREETS! One of the best exchange offices in Prague is located at Politických vězňů 21, Praha 1 (Mon-Sun: 8.00-21.00). It doesn’t charge additional fees, it is a local’s favorite.
-Wherever you go, don’t forget to take your documents with you (passport or any other identification document). According to Czech law, you are required to have these documents. Make sure that they are securely hidden, so they won’t get stolen.
– Be careful with your personal belongings. As in any tourist city, there are many pickpockets in Prague. Hide the import stuff and always keep your bag closed. In public transport or crowded places put the bag in front of you, so you can see it. Don’t put the phone, documents or money inside the pocket that can be easily accessed.
– Do not leave your personal belongings unsupervised in public, even for a few minutes. Always carry them around with you even if you go to the bathroom.
– When going for a walk around the city, stock up with water. Unfortunately, the city does not have a sufficient number of places where you can refill it and the prices are pretty high at the most of touristy places (you might pay 10 times more or even higher). You can buy water in any supermarket or you can fill the bottles at the place where you are staying. The tap water is drinkable. For example there are three supermarkets on Wenceslas Square and one at Na Přikope Street.
– Also make sure to wear comfortable shoes. The sidewalks are decorated with pebbles and there are a lot of hills.
– Try to have meals outside the city center, otherwise you will have to overpay. If you take a walk or use the public transport to the city districts nearby, you can pay much less. For example Karlín district is packed with trendy cafes and restaurants – you can easily get there by tram from Wenceslas square.
– At pedestrian crossings, remember that the trams always have priority. And even though the pedestrians take precedence over the cars, beware that not all drivers remember this rule so CROSS ONCE YOU ARE SURE THAT THE MOVING TRANSPORT HAS STOPPED.
– Toilets can be found at almost every metro station. The exceptions are terminal stations, where they are often closed, especially during weekends or public holidays. There are also located in big shopping centers and at famous tourist locations – Old Town Square (Old Town Hall), Prague Castle, Wallstein Garden, Petřín Hill, Vyšehrad etc.
